Once upon a time, in Prambanan Village, there was a kingdom led by Prabu Baka. He had a very beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang.
Once upon a time, Prambanan was defeated by the Pengging Kingdom led by Bandung Bondowoso. Prabu Baka died on the battlefield. He was killed by the very powerful Bandung Bondowoso.
Bandung Bondowoso then occupied Prambanan Palace. Seeing the beautiful daughter of Prabu Baka, Roro Jonggrang, his desire to marry Roro Jonggrang arose.
Roro Jonggrang knew that Bandung Bondowoso was the one who killed her father. Therefore, she looked for a way to reject him. Then, she proposed a condition that 1,000 temples and two deep wells be built. Everything had to be done in one night.
Bandung Bondowoso agreed to Roro Jonggrang's terms. He asked his father for help and mobilized an army of spirits to help him on the appointed day. By midnight, only five temples remained unfinished and the two wells were almost finished.
Knowing that 1,000 temples were almost finished, Roro Jonggrang was terrified.
“What should I do to stop him?” she thought anxiously at the thought of having to accept the proposal of Bandung Bondowoso who had killed her parents.
Finally, she woke up the girls of Prambanan Village and ordered them to light torches and burn straw, beat pestles on mortar, and scatter fragrant flowers. The atmosphere was bright and boisterous. A red tinge appeared in the sky instantly.
Roosters crowed in unison. Hearing the sound, the spirits immediately left work. They thought it was morning and the sun would rise soon. At that point, there was only one temple left to build.
Bandung Bondowoso was shocked and angry to realize that his efforts had failed. In his anger, Bandung Bondowoso cursed Roro Jonggrang to become a statue to complete the unfinished temple.
The statue of Roro Jonggrang was placed inside a large temple chamber. Until now, the temple is called Candi Roro Jonggrang. Meanwhile, the surrounding temples are called Candi Sewu (Candi Seribu) although the number has not reached 1,000.
