Penggunaan This, That, These dan Those

Penggunaan this, that, these, dan those adalah empat kata dalam bahasa Inggris yang mana penggunaannya cukup membingungkan English learners, terutama learners yang masih level pemula. Sebenarnya penggunaan this, that, these, dan those cukup mudah. this, that, these, dan those merupakan demonstrative atau kata tunjuk dalam bahasa Inggris yang bisa berperan sebagai pronoun (kata ganti) atau sebagai demonstrative adjective (kata sifat yang berupa kata tunjuk). Dalam bahasa Indonesia, this dan these berarti “ini”.

 

• This untuk kata benda tunggal atau kata benda yang berjumlah satu.
• These untuk kata benda jamak atau kata benda yang berjumlah lebih dari satu

Untuk kata kerja dan kata benda yang mengikuti this harus bersifat tunggal. Misal:

• This is a cat. –> benar.
• This are a cat. –> salah karena kata kerja yang digunakan (are) adalah bersifat jamak.
• This is cats. –> salah karena kata benda (cats) bersifat jamak.

Sedangkan kata kerja dan kata benda yang mengikuti these harus bersifat jamak. Misal:

• These dogs are cute. –> benar.
• These dog are cute. –> salah karena kata benda (dog) bersifat tunggal.
• These dogs is cute. –> salah karena kata kerja (is) bersifat tunggal.

1. This dan these sebagai kata tunjuk benda jarak dekat Penggunaan this dan these yang pertama adalah untuk membicarakan kata benda yang jaraknya dekat dengan kita. Ingat selalu bahwa this untuk tunggal, dan these untuk jamak. Misal:

• This is my table. (Ini adalah kursiku)
• Whose umbrella is this? (Payung ini milik siapa?)
• These earrings must be very expensive. (Anting-anting ini pasti harganya mahal)
• This costs a fortune. (Ini harganya mahal)
• John is planning to sell these paintings. (John berencana untuk menjual lukisan-lukisan ini)
• These come from Bali. (Ini berasal dari bali)

2. This dan these untuk memperkenalkan orang lain Penggunaan this dan these selanjutnya adalah untuk memperkenalkan orang lain. Contoh:

• This is Mary. (ini adalah Tina)
• This is Peter, the person whom I’ve talked to you about. (Ini adalah Peter, orang yang aku ceritakan padamu)
• These are my sisters, Kiara and Nikita. (Ini adalah saudari-saudariku, Kiara dan Nikita)
• These are my friends from London. (Ini adalah teman-temanku dari London)

3. This dalam menelepon Kita juga bisa menggunakan this untuk memperkenalkan diri ketika kita menelepon. Misal:

• Hello, this is Carol. (Halo, ini Carol)
• Hello, this is Happy Café. How can I help you? (Halo, ini Happy Café. Ada yang bisa saya bantu?)
• Hello, this is Jane. Can I talk to Robin? (Halo, ini Jane. Bisakah saya berbicara dengan Robin?)

Keterangan: These tidak digunakan untuk memperkenalkan diri saat menelepon. That dan Those That dan those berarti “itu”.

• That untuk kata benda tunggal atau kata benda yang berjumlah satu.
• Those untuk kata benda jamak atau kata benda yang berjumlah lebih dari satu.

Untuk kata kerja dan kata benda yang mengikuti that harus bersifat tunggal. Misal:

• That is my car. –> benar.
• That are my car. –> salah karena kata kerja yang digunakan (are) adalah bersifat jamak.
• That is my cars. –> salah karena kata benda (cars) bersifat jamak.

Sedangkan kata kerja dan kata benda yang mengikuti those harus bersifat jamak. Misal:

• Those girls were funny. –> benar.
• Those girl were funny. –> salah karena kata benda (girl) bersifat tunggal.
• Those girls was funny. –> salah karena kata kerja (was) bersifat tunggal.

1. That dan those sebagai kata tunjuk benda jarak jauh Jika kita ingin membicarakan seseorang atau sesuatu yang jaraknya jauh dari kita, gunakanlah that atau those. That untuk tunggal, dan those untuk jamak. Contoh:

• That is a cool hat. (Itu adalah topi yang keren)
• Those are my favorite cartoons. (Itu adalah kartun-kartun kesukaanku)
• Did you bring that? (Apakah kamu membawa itu?)
• How much are those? (Itu berapa harganya?)
• Those children used to live here. (Anak-anak itu dulu tinggal di sini)
• That scarf looks good on you. (Syal itu terlihat bagus untukmu)

2. That untuk merespon seseorang That bisa digunakan untuk membalas sesuatu yang dikatakan oleh seseorang. Misal:

• A: You already did your homework, right? (Kamu sudah mengerjakan PRmu, kan?) B: That’s right. (Ya)

• A: Should we tell him? (Haruskah kita memberitahunya?) B: Yes. That’s a good idea. (Ya. Itu ide yang bagus)

• A: We won the grand prize. (Kami memenangkan hadiah utama) B: That’s fantastic! Congratulations! (Itu luar biasa! Selamat!)

Natalie: Oh, this one? Yeah. It was about $50.

Todd: $50? That's a lot.

Natalie: I know. It's an American brand.

Todd: Ah. Do they have that shirt in different colors?

Natalie: Yes, so I actually have this top in six colors.

Todd: Really? What colors?

Natalie: I have it in purple, blue, red, gray, white, and black. Actually, I have two black ones, so that's seven.

Todd: You have two shirts in black? Why?

Natalie: Well, black is such a good color to wear. It matches everything.

Todd: Yeah. So true, so true. What about your pants? Those pants are pretty cool too.

Natalie: Oh, these? Yeah. These were much cheaper than the tops. I bought these in San Francisco. They cost about $40.

Todd: Ooh. Those are cheap. That's a good price.

Natalie: It is, and I only have one pair of these.

Todd: And your shoes? Did you buy those shoes in San Francisco too?

Natalie: No, I didn't buy these in San Francisco. These, I bought online.

Todd: You bought them online?

Natalie: Yes. These sandals are really hard to find, so I had to buy them through Amazon.

Todd: Oh, I like Amazon. I buy lots of things on Amazon. For example, I bought this watch on Amazon.

Natalie: How much did it cost?

Todd: Well, this watch was really cheap. This watch only cost about $20.

Natalie: Whoa.

Todd: Yeah, but I have two watches, and I also bought a nice, gold watch on Amazon. That watch was very expensive. It cost $200.

Natalie: Whoa, $200 on a watch? I think my watch only cost maybe $70, but I really like this watch. It's an Apple Watch. I bought it in Malaysia. I've had it for about two years now, but I think now that I have an Apple Watch, I'll always have Apple Watches.

Todd: Yeah, that is a nice watch. I want an Apple Watch too.

Natalie: Yeah, they're so cool. I spend so much time on my phone, and the watch works really well with my phone. I definitely recommend it.

Todd: Yeah, I like this cheap watch, because if it rains, or if I play sports, or if I am traveling, I can take my cheap watch, because this watch is not important. I can break it. I can lose it. I can do anything. But my gold watch, that watch is expensive, so I keep it at home. I only wear it on nice occasions.

Natalie: Oh, well it's nice to have something a little more expensive, but my watch can tell me what the weather's like, my watch can tell me how many calories I've burned, and my watch can tell me what the time is anywhere in the world.

Todd: You know, I think I need to get a watch like that.

Natalie: This is the greatest watch.
